Description
The author was a young seaman second class on board the USS Houston when it sank during the Battle of the Javas Sea on March 1, 1942. One of only 368 survivors out of a crew of 1,061 men, he was eventually captured by the Japanese and forced to work on the Death Railway in the jungles of Burma.
