<isc:description>
During its
heyday as a cattle town, Miles City called itself the “Cow Capital of the
World.” Later, after adjacent Fort Keogh was converted to an army remount
depot, Miles City proudly shared its identity: “This is Uncle Sam’s horse
ranch. The employees are all civilians, and the wranglers are cowpunchers and
expert riders.” Later still, a wild method of gathering and selling horses off
the range produced the most recognized nickname of all: “The World-Famous Miles
City Bucking Horse Sale.”

In 1884
the Montana Stockgrowers Association was organized in Miles City, which hosted
the event for thirty-four years. Stock thieves plagued open range ranchers, and
young Theodore Roosevelt impulsively called for “a war against rustlers.” But
pioneer Montana cattleman Granville Stuart already was quietly organizing
deadly retaliation, and soon his fourteen “Stuart’s Stranglers” killed nineteen
rustlers in the countryside.

Fort Keogh
at its height boasted a garrison and civilian employees totaling nearly 1,000
men. Every night the troopers caroused at the saloons and parlor houses of
Miles City. There were frequent brawls involving fists and boots, but deadly
encounters were rare. There was one fatal shooting, one throat-cutting, and one
lynching. Otherwise, troopers and civilians enjoyed hard-drinking fun. Fort
Keogh became known as a party post, complete with balls and parties for
officers and ladies - including a memorable evening with John Philip Sousa and
his US Marine Band. Meanwhile, Miles City became famous as a good time town,
with street dances and frequent parades.

<isc:description>Few accounts of life in 19th century provide either the vivid detail or the poignancy of those reflections set down by Sarah Harkey Hall in 1905. Her narrative written at the age of forty-eight for her children, captured the rhythms of daily and seasonal life in frontier San Saba County and chronicles her struggle for physical and emotional survival, as well as the struggles of her family and community. Unlike many pioneer memoirs written for later generations, Sarah’s does not assume a nostalgic or triumphant tone and does not glide over the daily hardships of life in a new country. The result is a remarkable record of frontier endurance, a record more bitter than sweet. Sarah’s parents settled in 1853-1854 on Richland Creek in Central Texas, within the then-vast boundaries of Bexar County. They were among the first immigrants in the region, locating “one mile east of Richland Springs among the recently vacated wigwams of the Comanche Indians.</isc:description>

<isc:description>“Tumbling Tumbleweeds” and “Cool Water” are only a couple of the hundreds of songs created by the Sons of the Pioneers, the most famous singing group in the history of Western music. Charter members Roy Rogers (Len Slye), Bob Nolan, Tim Spencer, and brothers Hugh and Karl Farr (two gifted instrumentalists from Texas) developed a unique style of vocal control and harmony that became the group’s trademark. During the 1930s and 1940s, the prolific Nolan, along with other members of the Pioneers, composed hundreds of songs, primarily for film appearances. Although Roy Rogers left the group for movie stardom, the Pioneers appeared with the “King of the Cowboys” in forty-two films. There were one hundred movies appearances in all, including “Rio Grande” and “The Searchers” with John Wayne. Alumni of the Pioneers include Pat Brady, Lloyd Perryman, and Ken Curtis “Festus of TV’s “Gunsmoke”), and today the Sons of the Pioneers carry on the long tradition of their group in Branson, Missouri. </isc:description>

<isc:description>Cherokee Bill, one of the meanest of the mean, was hanged for the murder of thirteen men by the time he was twenty. Author Art Burton recounts the exploits of Cherokee Bill and other black and Indian outlaws and lawmen in Black, Red, and Deadly, the story of law and lawlessness in the Indian Territory. He also tells of Dick Glass, the most notorious African-American outlaw during the 1880s; Ned Christie, the most feared Indian outlaw of his time; the Rufus Buck gang, who gained instant notoriety with murder, plunder, and rape; as well as others who rode the trail of crime. The author introduces Ezekiel Proctor, the only man with whome the U.S. government made a treaty; Indian policemen known as "Lighthorsemen"; fearless Sam Sixkiller; black men who rode for Judge Parker, the "hanging judge," such as Grant Johnson; and Bass Reeves, the greatest manhunter of them all. Blacks were hired as peace officers because of their knowledge of Indian Territory. All-black calvery units built Fort Sill in the 1870s and kept settlers in check before the Land Run of 1889 when Oklahoma Territory was opened to settlement. </isc:description>

<isc:description>Bluebonnet Award Nominee. - Searching for a better life, Mina, Papa, and Mama left their German fatherland aboard the brig Margaretha, bound for Texas. They had been told it was the paradise of North America, but when Mina steps onto the desolate beach at Indian Point on a cold December day in 1845, she wants to go back to Germany and Opa's cozy house in the village of Wehrestedt. But go on they must. In spite of mama's tragic death, Mina and Papa push inland with the Kaufmann family to the Texas hill country. There Mina encounters an Indian chief and his young daughter, Amaya, whose help she needs when Papa falls ill. Based on her ancestors' immigration to Texas, Janice Shefelman tells of a journey into the wilderness that is filled with hardship, tragedy and adventure . . . young readers will glimpse a fascinating view of what life in early Texas was like for German settlers.Texas </isc:description>

The book offers updates on developments in Tulsa generally and in Tulsa's Greenwood District specifically since the publication of Hannibal B. Before peering through that porthole, we must first reflect on Tulsa's Historic Greenwood District in all its splendor and squalor, from the prodigious entrepreneurial spirit that pervaded it to the carnage that characterized the 1921 massacre to the post-massacre rebound and rebuilding that raised the District to new heights to the mid-twentieth-century decline that proved to be a second near-fatal blow to the current recalibration and rebranding of a resurgent, but differently configured, community.

Tulsa's trajectory may be instructive for other communities similarly seeking to address their own histories of racial trauma. Conversely, Tulsa may benefit from learning more about the paths taken by other communities. Through sharing and synergy, we stand a better chance of doing the work necessary to spur healing and move farther toward the reconciliation of which we so often speak.
     </isc:description>

His devotion and talent has produced the most comprehensive reference work to date on this important subject. Sumrall's beautifully illustrated volume covers more than fifty Texas regimental colors from Hood's famous Texas Brigade in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia to lesser-known units in the Tennessee and trans-Mississippi theaters. Also included are unidentified colors of regiments, companies and irregulars who were transferred from theater to theater during the war or absorbed into other regiments. Amateur and scholarly historians alike will discover a fascinating collection of battle flags in Sumrall's book. These vary considerably from the stereotyped Confederate battle flag which has received so much recent publicity. The author provides unusual variations, including the "Tyler Guards" prewar flag as the Third Texas Volunteer Cavalry; the "Beauregard Battleflag" of Parson's Dragons, the Twelfth Texas Cavalry Regiment; the blue "Harde's" battle flags of the 17th and 18th Texas Dismounted Cavalry of Cleburne's division, in addition to numerous other and more obscure designs. Each flag is accompanied by detailed historical and reference information specifying exact sizes, dimensions, colors and fabrics of the period. For the historian, researcher, teacher, library and Texas Civil War buff, this book is a real treasure. </isc:description>

A few months later, while serving as an army scout, Billy earned a Medal of Honor during an even more desperate engagement, as one of six men battling for their lives against a band of 125 warriors at the Buffalo Wallow Fight. Both of these actions took place in the Texas Panhandle, where Dixon became an icon of heroism.

Billy ran away to the West during boyhood, eagerly seeking adventure on the frontier. He worked as a woodchopper, a trapper, a bullwhacker and a muleskinner. Dixon became a buffalo hunter, displaying exceptional skills as a sharpshooter. After almost a decade as an army scout, Dixon returned to Adobe Walls to establish a bachelor home on the sparsely-settled plains.

A fellow adventure-seeker, Olive King, came to the Panhandle from back East to visit her cowboy brothers. She became a frontier schoolmarm, and she met her famous neighbor, Billy Dixon. Billy and Olive fell in love, married, and had eight children. Olive persuaded Billy to dictate his memoirs to her, and the result was a classic frontier biography, Life of “Billy” Dixon: Plainsman, Scout, and Pioneer. During a long widowhood, Olive Dixon became a significant force in Panhandle history, helping to establish the Panhandle-Plains Museum, writing and speaking about her own pioneer experiences as well as Billy’s, and erecting impressive monuments at Adobe Walls and at Buffalo Wallow.
      </isc:description>

<isc:description>Black, Buckskin, and Blue takes an in-depth look at African Americans who were scouts and soldiers on the United States western frontier during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The author explores the incidents and adventures black men were involved in during the westward movement as scouts and soldiers. Bypassing the radical hostilities they endured in frontier towns - well covered by other books - the author examines military incidents involving black soldiers and desperadoes, as well as certain critical military engagements in which they made important contributions. This book is a continuation of the research begun by the author more than a decade ago for Black, Red, and Deadly: Black and Indian Gunfighters of the Indian Territory, 1870-1907. </isc:description>
